Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical practice used to prevent and treat illness. It involves inserting a fine needle in various acupuncture points of the body along what are called meridian lines. These 12 lines or major channels allow energy called Chi to circulate around the body.
The meridian lines are located in the subtle or energetic body, which serves as the energetic blueprint for the physical body. Most acupuncturists believe that blocks or breaks in the flow of Chi in the energetic system will eventually lead to illness in the physical body. Acupuncture helps restore the natural flow of Chi in the body, thereby bringing the body back in balance.
A typical treatment involves inserting 12-14 sterile needles along various meridian lines and lasts about 30 minutes. Most patients feel no pain. Some patients experience a light tingling sensation or heat in different areas of the body. A few notice a light headed feeling for a few minutes.
Common conditions treated by acupuncture include neck and low back pain, sports injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, fibromyalgia, headaches, and stress/anxiety issues. Although some patients feel significant improvement with one treatment, generally 3-4 treatments are needed for long-term success. Depending on the medical condition, acupuncture improves/alleviates symptoms in about 75% of patients.
Acupuncture is very safe with few side effects. Most patients find the treatments relaxing. Within a day or two, many patients report improved energy levels, better sleep patterns and a calmer more balanced feeling for daily life. Since acupuncture is generally not covered by most insurance carriers, payment will be at time of service.
