The future of medicine will greatly emphasize the HOLISTIC approach to health and disease. By choosing to live a balanced, holistic lifestyle, an individual can significantly reduce both the incidence and complications associated with chronic medical conditions.
Many patients ask what is a holistic approach? The idea of holistic health was advanced by two of the leading philosophers of their times, Plato and Edgar Cayce. Plato (500 BC) believed health needed a balance of body, mind and spirit. He is credited with the concept of, “Sound Body, Sound Mind, Sound Spirit”. Edgar Cayce, in the early 20th century, expanded on that idea by proposing that, “Spirit is the Life, Mind is the Builder and Physical is the Result”.
The fundamental cornerstone of health and disease is that human beings need to stay in balance and harmony. When we are out of balance, different disease processes can and do arise. The holistic idea is to bring a patient more in balance physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, rather than just treating the disease process.
During the initial consultation and follow-up visits, discussions will emphasize lifestyle changes including stress reduction techniques, exercise, diet and supplements. The major focus of care will be proactive rather than diagnostic in nature. These counseling sessions are not a substitute for regular health care by a primary care physician.
In addition, every consultation will address, in some fashion, the emotional/spiritual component to health and disease. Mind/body techniques such as deep breathing, yoga or meditation will be recommended when indicated. Sometimes patients are referred to other health care practitioners such as nutritionists, T’ai Chi teachers, Reiki practitioners, or psychologists.
This type of medical service is generally covered by most insurance carriers. If not, payment will be fee for service at a reduced rate. First time appointments will be about an hour long.
